Blocked drains in Craigieburn
What blocks drains in Craigieburn homes, how a plumber clears and checks them, who owns which pipe under Yarra Valley Water rules, and published price ranges.
A blocked drain in a Craigieburn house is usually a build-up of wipes, fat or tree roots in the underground sewer pipe between the house and the property’s sewer connection. A plumber clears it with a drain machine or a high-pressure jetter, then a camera inspection shows whether the pipe is cracked, sagging or full of roots. If the blockage sits on the water corporation’s side of the inspection opening, Yarra Valley Water fixes it, not you.

Craigieburn Plumbers does not clear drains itself. A drain enquiry sent here is referred to an independent licensed plumber, who decides on the price and does the clearing or repair.
How do you know the drain itself is blocked?
One slow basin is often a hair clog in that fixture’s trap. A blocked drain shows up across several fixtures at once. Look for:
- the toilet gurgling or rising when the shower or washing machine empties
- water bubbling up through the overflow relief gully outside the laundry or bathroom wall
- a sewage smell in the yard, or a damp patch over the line of the pipe
- the kitchen sink and laundry trough both draining slowly
- a blockage that comes back a few weeks after it was cleared
The overflow relief gully matters more than most people think. Yarra Valley Water explains that it is there to stop sewage spilling inside the house, that it usually sits just outside the rear or side wall, and that keeping it working is the owner’s job. It also warns that a faulty gully may reduce an insurance payout after a sewer spill, so keep the grate clear and the top above the surrounding soil.
What usually causes the blockage?
Tree roots find small gaps at pipe joints and grow into a mat that catches everything else. Older clay pipes have more joints for roots to enter, while newer PVC drains in estate homes mostly block from what goes down them: wet wipes, cooking fat, sanitary products and building debris left in the line during construction. Ground movement can also shift a section of pipe so it holds water and silt.
Ways a Craigieburn drain gets cleared
| Approach | Good for | Where it falls short |
|---|---|---|
| Plunger or hand auger | One slow fixture: frees its trap or a short indoor run | Never reaches the main drain |
| Drain machine (eel) | Roots, wipes and general blockages, cut by a spinning cable | Root stubs stay behind and regrow |
| Water jetter | Fat, silt, sludge and fine roots, scoured off the whole pipe wall | May force water out of a broken joint |
| CCTV camera | Repeat blockages, a pre-purchase check, or before digging; it films and locates faults | Finds the fault but does not fix it |
| Digging and repair | A collapsed, cracked or badly dropped section, replaced | Paving, garden beds or concrete get disturbed |
A camera inspection after clearing is worth asking for when the same drain has blocked before. It turns a guess into a recording you can keep, and it tells you whether the next step is maintenance or repair.
What a plumber will check and ask you
Expect questions about how many fixtures are affected, when the problem started, whether it has happened before, and where the sewer inspection opening is. A plumber will want access to the overflow relief gully and to any inspection shaft or boundary trap. Photos of the gully and the yard over the drain line help with a first estimate.
If the inspection shaft has been buried under turf or paving, it has to be raised to the surface before the line can be cleared properly. Yarra Valley Water says it will not clear a blockage through a buried shaft and that raising it is the owner’s cost.
Your pipe or Yarra Valley Water’s?
Yarra Valley Water supplies water and sewerage across Craigieburn and the neighbouring Hume suburbs. Its repair responsibilities page says its responsibility ends at the inspection opening or up to 1 metre from the property boundary, whichever is less. Everything on the house side of that point belongs to the owner. When a plumber finds the fault on the authority’s side, report it to Yarra Valley Water and keep the plumber’s findings.
What drain clearing costs
An independent Melbourne cost guide prices clearing an ordinary blockage at $160 to $525. When the line also needs high-pressure jetting and a camera run through it, the guide’s range is $370 to $1,150. Outside business hours the visit alone is listed at $260 to $735 in the same guide. Excavation and pipe replacement are priced after the camera shows the length and depth of the damage. The Craigieburn plumbing cost guide explains what moves these numbers.
The rules that apply
In Victoria, plumbers are registered or licensed by the Building and Plumbing Commission (BPC) in separate classes. Below-ground drains fall under the drainage class and above-ground waste pipes under sanitary. Part 12A of the Building Act 1993 makes a compliance certificate from a licensed plumber compulsory for building, installing or altering a below-ground sanitary drain, no matter how small the job. You should receive it within five days of the work finishing, and the plumber also lodges it with the BPC. Other plumbing work needs one once its total value, including materials and GST, passes the dollar threshold on the BPC compliance certificate page.
The BPC’s own inspections show why this matters. Its 2026 compliance report found that 29 per cent of more than 2,400 drainage inspections failed, with drains missing proper bedding or support, bends and risers without the required concrete support, and pipes not laid straight to an even grade among the common faults.
What a careful plumber will not skip
- testing the repaired section before backfilling, rather than covering it and hoping
- keeping the inspection opening and overflow relief gully at surface level
- leaving you the camera recording or photos when a repair is recommended
- telling you plainly when a fault is on Yarra Valley Water’s side instead of charging to dig it up
Be wary of anyone who recommends a full replacement without showing footage of the pipe, or who offers to “fix” a drain without being registered in the drainage class.
Local angle
Craigieburn’s housing spans five decades. Suburban growth started with a 1972 subdivision and the Plaza shopping centre opened on the east side near the station in 1975, while the Highlands shopping centre in the north opened in 2011 and the western town centre in 2012. In the older parts, garden and street trees have had decades to reach the pipes. In the newer estates, blockages are more often wipes, fat or construction debris. The Craigieburn area page covers that split, and owners in Roxburgh Park see a similar pattern in homes built from the 1990s.
What to do next
If water is backing up inside, stop using the affected fixtures and keep children away from the gully. Then send a drain enquiry with your suburb, which fixtures are affected, whether the overflow gully has spilled, and any photos. If a broken pipe has also caused a leak, the burst pipes and leak detection guide explains the next steps.
Frequently asked questions
- Can I use chemical drain cleaner on a blocked sewer drain?
It may shift a soft blockage close to a sink, but it does nothing to tree roots and can damage some pipes and seals. Tell the plumber if you have poured any product in, so they can take care when opening the line.
- Why does my toilet gurgle when the washing machine empties?
Water from the machine is being pushed past a partial blockage further down the shared drain, drawing air back through the toilet trap. It usually means the main house drain needs clearing, not the toilet.
- Will a plumber need to dig up my yard?
Not usually. Most blockages are cleared through an existing inspection opening or gully. Digging only comes into it when a camera shows a broken, sunken or collapsed section that cannot be fixed from inside the pipe.
- Who do I call if sewage is overflowing in the street?
A spill from a public sewer main or a manhole in the street belongs to the water corporation. Report it to Yarra Valley Water's faults line, which is listed on its website and on your water bill.
- How often should a drain with roots be cleared?
That depends on how fast the roots return. If a line needs clearing more than once a year, a camera inspection helps you decide whether to keep maintaining it or to repair the joints the roots are entering.
