Plumbing in Kalkallo VIC 3064
Plumbing in Kalkallo VIC 3064: near-new estate homes, purple pipe recycled water, builder warranty defects, appliance additions and the 2027 gas rules.
Kalkallo, on the Hume Freeway north of Craigieburn, has grown from a small historic township into a growth suburb since the 2010s. Most homes are near-new houses in the estates, and Kalkallo is one of Yarra Valley Water’s mandated recycled water areas, so many properties have two water supplies. Plumbing work here is mostly warranty defects, additions to builder-installed plumbing, and keeping the drinking and recycled water systems apart.
This site collects Kalkallo plumbing enquiries and refers them to independent licensed providers. Each provider gives their own quote and is responsible for their own work.
From township to growth area
Kalkallo began as a stop on the Sydney Road in the 1840s and 1850s, with hotels and accommodation houses serving gold rush traffic, and declined once the railway took the passing trade. Until the 2010s it was a few streets, a service station and a pub, surrounded by farms. Since then most of the suburb has been developed by the Cloverton estate. The Merri Creek runs along the east, and the Kalkallo Grasslands protect remnant native grassland.
The ABS 2021 QuickStats for Kalkallo counted 5,548 people in 1,884 private dwellings. Of occupied homes, 97.6 per cent were separate houses, 71.7 per cent were owned with a mortgage and only 5.0 per cent were owned outright. The average dwelling had 3.9 bedrooms and the median age was 30. Building has continued since that census.
Two water supplies: drinking and recycled
Kalkallo appears on Yarra Valley Water’s list of mandated recycled water areas, which means developments must supply Class A recycled water through a third, purple pipe system. In a typical home it feeds the toilets, the washing machine and the garden taps.
This affects almost every plumbing job in the suburb:
- A plumber must know which pipes carry recycled water before cutting into anything.
- Yarra Valley Water requires a registered plumber for any plumbing work on a property with recycled water, so the recycled supply stays connected only to toilets and outside taps.
- Purple taps cannot be swapped for a tap of another colour, and the warning signs must stay in place.
- After any plumbing work, do the cross-connection test Yarra Valley Water publishes. Shutting the drinking water supply at its meter should stop every indoor cold tap within minutes; a tap that keeps flowing may be on recycled water and should not be used until a licensed plumber checks it.
The toilet and tap repairs guide covers recycled water toilets in more detail.
Builder warranty first
With so many homes only a few years old, check whether a fault is the builder’s to fix before paying someone else. Leaking shower mixers, cisterns that run, relief valve drains that discharge in the wrong place and gurgling drains from construction debris are all worth reporting to the builder in writing. Keep your handover pack, including the plumbing compliance certificates. Each certificate confirms the work is covered by the plumber’s insurance for six years.
If the builder does not respond, the BPC handles complaints about plumbing work and the BPC register shows whether a plumber held the right registration or licence.
Additions and upgrades
Once the warranty questions are settled, Kalkallo owners often want to add to the house:
- a water line to a fridge or a second garden tap
- an outdoor gas point or a gas line extension, where the home is already connected to gas
- a laundry tub, a pet wash or an outdoor shower
- a filtered drinking water tap in the kitchen
Additions near a recycled water line must not be connected to it. A drinking water tap or a kitchen appliance has to come off the drinking water supply only.
Gas and electric homes
Homes already connected to gas can keep and extend their gas supply. From 1 January 2027, new homes generally cannot be connected to gas, and once a gas hot water unit in an existing house can no longer be repaired, its replacement from 1 March 2027 has to be electric. Depending on when and how a Kalkallo house was built, it may have gas appliances or be all-electric, so say which when you describe the job. The gas fitting guide and the hot water guide explain both sides.
Drains in a new suburb
New drains rarely fail from roots. They block from wipes, fat, and in the first year or two, from building rubble, grout or plaster left in the line. If a toilet and shower in a new house both drain slowly, mention the age of the house when you describe it.
Nearby suburbs
Mickleham to the west shares the 3064 postcode and the same new-estate jobs, and Craigieburn to the south has a wider mix of housing ages.

Yes. Kalkallo is in the City of Hume, shares the 3064 postcode with Craigieburn, Roxburgh Park and Mickleham, and sits on the Hume Freeway north of Craigieburn.
- Can I put a drinking water filter on a recycled water tap?
No. Recycled water is not for drinking or food preparation whatever filter is fitted. Drinking water taps and filtered taps must be fed only from the drinking water supply.
- Why are there purple taps at my Kalkallo house?
Purple marks the recycled water supply, used for toilets, the washing machine and the garden. Yarra Valley Water requires the purple taps and their warning signs to stay in place.
- Who do I contact about a defect in my new Kalkallo home?
Report it to your builder in writing first. Keep the compliance certificates from your handover pack, because they identify the plumber who did the work and confirm the insurance behind it.
